Perhaps it was his overwhelming characteristic of pride that earned him so many enemies among those he worked with. Whatever the reason, Benedict Arnold continually found himself brought before the court on charges, and soon became unpopular even before Congress, from whom he earned a lot of negative attention. On several occasions Congress refused to recognize his achievements and even demoted his military rank despite the letter of recommendation submitted for Arnold by George Washington.
